Have you ever wished that while you are cycling through the wilderness you can use your smart phone, take a picture or use some other new gadget longer than it's battery lasts? Or even make that important call, find specific location on a map, or just go online but your battery is empty? An external battery can fix that problem for a short period of time, but at the end of the day you will need electricity. A young explorer and student from Serbia named Goran Sajdl decided to rectify these situations by creating a small, but very helpful device called CycleCharger. It is a low-tech and eco-friendly recharger that can recharge any kind of device with a battery and USB input.
The CycleCharger uses the kinetic energy from the rotating wheels of a bicycle and transforms it into the necessary electric energy. According to the author, all it takes is for the bicycle to be moving at least 5-8 km/h and there would be enough power for CycleCharger. The device is connected with the small generator and instead of acting as external battery, the energy is available all the time. With few other components such as capacitor, stabilizer and adapter the dream of every adventurer of keeping the music playing indefinitely has become true!
The loading rate of the battery is same as a USB computer connection, but the creator is working on the next generation of the charger that would increase the speed by 50%. Also, the CycleCharger`s physical characteristics make it perfect for travel. It is a small, lightweight, waterproof and shockproof device with a low carbon footprint.
Currently, the local dispatch rider company Eko Kurir, which uses bicycles to deliver the mail through the city of Novi Sad, is raising funds to make more prototypes and test the idea in the field to the extreme. “This project represents the perfect synergy of creativity and sense for socially responsible principles. CycleCharger puts sustainability and the use of renewable energy resources in the centre of its motive. These features make it extremely innovative and unique in our region. Implementation of the project would ensure existence of a full environmental courier, protect the environment, and thereby help promote a healthy lifestyle, sport, and sustainable development” says the director.
It all started quite spontaneously. The creator Goran Sajdl graduated from high school specialised in electronics and has been cycling for years. Since his routes were pretty long, after a while he had to face the same problem as any other cyclist – how to solve the problem of recharging any contemporary device on the road. With his knowledge from the field he decided to end his frustrations and create this green little helper that recycles the kinetic energy without side effects to the environment or users. So, before hitting the road order the CycleCharger and stay green and connected at all times.
