GrowSocial is an idea that emerged from a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Social entrepreneurship offered by the Copenhagen Business School. One of the participants suggested starting a venture to solve the issue of local food efficiency by bridging: urban farming, sustainable management and societies. And all of a sudden, this Social Market Society became a hit, it was the most popular post in the classroom!
What was all the fuss about?
Setting a platform to provide the infrastructure which would enable the local city producers to access a market, by targeting the amateur professionals (namely, bee keepers, chicken keepers, herb gardeners, homemade jams and food producers) up to SMEs (small or medium enterprises), and offer more diverse options to consumers. The open access platform not only aims to bring together both sides, producers and buyers, but additionally, it will promote local events (such as farm markets and fairs), local service providers (e.g. consultants, logistics, gardeners), indications on where to send your waste for compost, and have a special feature to share content (with input from the users). Henceforward, to establish a virtual market place customized for a specific geographic area.
Three core aspects that GrowSocial will focus on are:
- Connecting People and Local Food
- Enhancing Food Security
- Food Waste Reduction
The whole platform will have an online review system based on social constructs for peer-to-peer ratings. And it will bring about a place to connect, make business, and better allocate regional production whilst reducing food waste.
Currently, the founders are working in close cooperation with a group of experienced interdisciplinary professionals from over four different continents on Phase I of GrowSocial. They have completed the planning stage and have moved forward to the crowd funding stage, the launching date for the pilot project is set to be January 2016 in Florida, US.
