Joaquín Leguía learned from his brother Augusto how to value and to love nature by taking care of his little garden. He inspired him to follow his dream and to found ANIA (Association for Children and their Environment). ANIA is a non-profit organization in Peru that seeks developing children's knowledge, abilities and values related to the environment.
One initiative of ANIA is the children's forests program, called “TiNi”. A TiNi is at least a half square meter of land provided by adults to children and the youth, where they voluntarily raise and care for life in order to strengthen their knowledge, skills, values, self-esteem and appreciation for the environment. The TiNi can be implemented in urban and rural areas, by any child, regardless of their economic, social or cultural background. This program has been recognized by UNESCO as an initiative that contributes to promoting sustainable development. More than 20,000 children in 12 regions of the country have been participating so far. Joaquin's idea is that each child can have a TiNi at home, at school or in their community.
In 2004, Joaquin developed the animated character Ania, a seven years old girl that should inspire and guide the children and young people to develop actions for the environment. In partnership with El Comercio, America TV, Coney Park and Green Multimedia 'The World of Ania and Kin' was created. This is a green brand which includes events, publications, stuffed animals, live attractions and is transmitted by America Television since 2013. The World of Ania and Kin aims to entertain, educate and promote values and best practices for the environment, spreading methodologies of TiNi and Eco-homes.
Joaquín is redefining environmental education as a community experience, giving prominence to children and the youth of Latin America, understanding that while they are the future, they are also an important part of our present who can make big changes in the world.
