The Nudge Explores Circular Cities Tour 2015 is on a trip through Europe from May 11 to May 21, collecting great Circle Economy examples. Our 5 ambassadors report their findings. On May 17th the Young Leaders in Sustainability visited Biopolus in Budapest, Hungary.
István Kenyeres is the President at the Biopolus Institute. He explains what Biopolus is about:
"Polus in Latin means the pivot, the point around which something turns, and for me BIOPOLUS is a real turning point. It turns the fossil based economy into a bio-based one.
In the past fifteen years I led one of the most exciting breakthroughs in wastewater treatment technology, working with thousands of different species from bacteria through plants, and to even fish, to clean water and wastewater in a beautiful greenhouse environment.
I learned how to design, build and operate this kind of super-intensive, engineered ecosystems to do this job for us. At a certain point I said to myself: why not use this combined intelligence of humans and nature to produce high added value products beside high quality reusable water? Instead of getting rid of the waste, let’s turn it into something useful!
Biopolus is doing exactly this. It develops and sells efficient, beautiful living factories – we call them BioMakeries – to convert wastewater and almost any kind of organic material into products for sale.
To learn more about this technology, the business and the people behind it, and to become part of the story, come and explore our website."
