What happens when a municipality and a couple of land developers are asked to find a new lay-out for an old harbour? Apparently, they start with asking some questions. For example: “ What makes a good city?” and “How can we keep warm yet stay CO2 free?” The result: HafenCity Hamburg: a stylish melting pot of different houses, cafes, companies, a university and at its centre the sea harbour. What sets HafenCity apart from other harbour cities is its focus on sustainable development and an all-over incorporation of this theme. At the core of this view lie the three principles of sustainable ecological urban development: First, a mixed urban structure, using resources effectively, secondly a time-saving mobility structure reducing carbon emissions, and lastly ecological energy supply and sustainable buildings.
