The Asociación Orgánica is an association of 8 fincas: farm houses in and around the mountain village of Chocontá. The farmers of the association practice small-scale and organic agriculture at an altitude of 2800 meters above sea level in the Andes, about 60 kilometers outside Bogotá.
During our short stay in Milan we visited Venti Sostenibili, an organisation that brings together social enterprises in and around Milan. At The Milano HUB, a shared space for startups and homebase of Venti Sostenibili, we discussed two of their fruitful projects and also what’s needed to move to a circular economy.
During our trip to Milan, we made use of the opportunity to visit the World Expo in Milan and to check out their level of circularity! Our visit started with Pavillion Zero, which was about the global food challenges we are facing.

Working together to capitalise on opportunities in the circular economy
Throughout Europe there is an emerging movement of social innovators fighting food waste. These food surplus entrepreneurs have developed activities to tackle food waste throughout the supply chain: prevention of food waste at the source, awareness-raising towards consumers, processing of food surplus into a product or delicious meal and redistribution of food surplus to people in need.
Human excrement contains heaps of nutrients which can be used to fertilize land and close the nutrient-loop. Ecological toilets make it possible to capture these excrements in a way that make it possible for them to be used as fertilisers.
During the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference, which takes place in Paris from 30th November to 11th December 2015, Place to B offers not only a place to stay, but also a coworking space, a program of events and a “News Fab Lab” about climate and solutions for the ecological transition.
Beyond COP21, Place to B is above all a movement fuelled by all those who want to convey the message in a different way.
Recycle unsold bread in beer, it is possible. That's what the Brussels Beer Project is doing with it's freshly released beer Babylone. Inspired by local actors, Beer Project spent a year prototyping a new kind of beer that uses unsold fresh bread to substitute malt as a raw material. Every month BBP brews 12.000 bottles of bread beer and saves about 500kg of bread from being wasted.
Rotterzwam is a company from The Netherlands that grows Oyster mushrooms. Not that special in itself, but they use old coffee ground and coffee peels to grow them on. They go around Rotterdam, a city in The Netherlands, and pick up old coffee ground from local bars and café’s. What was normally waste, now becomes a fertilizer for delicious mushrooms which they sell to hospitality businesses or directly to consumers. Their latest product is a grow kit for consumers so that everyone can start using their coffee waste and it turn into nutritious food.
Kromkommer makes soups out of wonky vegetables. Normally, these vegetables would be rejected and disposed, however, there is nothing wrong with them apart from the way they look.
or 'coffee in the field' makes circular economy simple and tangible. They use what was once seen as waste and turn it into a new resource, exactly what circular economy is.
